Jul 11, AM in response to VirtualMayhem In response to VirtualMayhem Before trying to downgrade the base station's firmware, I would suggest that you temporarily connect a pair of known working stereo headphones to the audio port on the Express. If the issue is still there with the headphones attached, the following are the steps to go back to an earlier version of firmware: For OS X Open AirPort Utility.
Select the Express, and then, click on Edit. A new window will appear. Hold down the Option key and hover the mouse cursor over the firmware build number. The firmware version number should now be highlighted. While still holding down the Option key, click on highlighted number to see all the firmware versions that are available. Click on the one you want to downgrade to. A dialog box will pop-up to let you know that the base station will be unavailable during the downgrade process. Choose either "Continue" to continue with the downgrade OR choose "Cancel" if you decide not to.
If you choose to continue, allow the firmware to be downloaded, installed, and for the Express to restart. You should now see a list of all firmware versions that are available. Reply Helpful 1 Thread reply - more options Link to this Post.

Follow the on-screen directions to run this troubleshooter and restart the computer to check if this helps. Further, as both laptops can connect to the network directly by an Ethernet cable, ensure to install all pending updates and restart the computer to check if that helps.
