Usb to serial cable tester

I did not find the LED indictors "dim" as some others have mentioned, mine were nice and bright, and exhibited no "bleed over" to the LED next to it. This unit is rugged and does what it says it will do, I did find like some other reviewers that the nuts next to one side of the connector get in the way when not mating to a cable but directly a device, simple to remove however and not a problem at all.

I would recommend this to others. I use this on Arduino projects to detect which lines have the data on them. I wish I had bought one of these years ago. Good for "seeing" your serial traffic and connectivity. Small and compact. Well built. LEDs light up when the pins are active and flash when traffic is passing. Works very well, glad to have it. The female-thread retainers were cumbersome and interfered with some cables; I had to remove them with pliers. Also would have preferred lights to shine red for positive, green for negative, but it's ok this way too.

Very handy item. The light for each line shows either none dim , green, or red. I am not sure whether green means high, and red low, or something else.

It works very well for loopback tests TX connected to RX. It can only be inserted between two cables, not between a cable and a chassis. I first used this device when I was commissioning data centers for Clearwire. Our job was to start up a newly built data center. Most network equipment is initially configured via a serial connection. Most adhere to the "Cisco standard" but some are just down right odd.

One of our tasks was to connect each device to a terminal server. That meant that we had to figure out each pin-out. This little matchbox sized lamp box saved our arses. If your life involves connecting to various odd serial ports, you want this.

If you have a serial cable in your kit, you want this in there with it. Though devices using serial connectivity are becoming a thing of the past, there are still a good number of devices that are not available with native USB connectivity and require serial port connectivity.

Unfortunately, serial devices are not as plug-and-play as USB devices and thus often require some level of troubleshooting to get them up and working. This handy little link tester can be invaluable in determining if the serial connection is mated properly and if communications is occurring. I have used a number of these types of devices over the years and this particular 9-pin device is very convenient.

The only drawback is the LEDs are not as bright as I would like to see. The top row has 8 pins and the lower row has 7. A: An HD15 connector has 15 pins arranged in three rows.

Each row has 5 pins with the middle row slightly offset from the top and bottom. The HD15 connector is a very common connector used mostly as a video interface for computers and monitors.

It can also be found on HD displays and on older HD source devices such as satellite receivers and cable boxes. A: A parallel cable is used to connect to the parallel ports on a computer and a peripheral device like a printer or external drive. IBM originally developed parallel ports and cables as a mean for connecting a printer to the earliest personal computers. A video is available for this device. This is really great for quickly taking the guesswork out of programming devices with potentially dodgy micro USB cables.

Can't wait for a USB-C version! I have some cables that are questionable. This helped me out nicely. Almost every device these days includes one in the package. This is the perfect tool to check and as often necessary, apply the mark of shame for cables that don't meet the spec. They were a real hit. I had two recipients tell me they were used the day after Christmas to test their cables. I know one of them was placed into a "Go bag" to be ready for use anytime.

Regardless of price one of the best received gifts I've given in years. The device can find cables that are defective and determine if a cable is power and data on just a power charging cable. Finally I had a chance to remove all my old cables that are only good for low power charging.

Quick delivery to Europe. Delivery to Germany was also good and quick. Exactly what I wanted. It does one great thing. Weeding out impostor USB cables. Shipping, documentation not necessary and communication why? Would definitely buy again. I have a bunch of USB cables from trade shows and determining which ones can be used for transfers is extremely useful.

This came complete with a battery so I was able to use it right out of the box, er envelope and its very easy to see which cables are good. Too bad we're moving to USB3 cables now, but as long as I have raspberry pis and similar devices which should be a long time I will get lots of use out of this doohickey! Does exactly what it says on the tin.

It would be great to have something this simple but capable of testing usb to type b, c, micro usb etc all in one package. This seemingly "obvious" device is going to save way more man hours than the price of admission! This particular device will never leave my desk or desk drawer, because I'm reaching for it at the first sign of oddities from now on. Everything I wanted and nothing I didn't.

Already used it to go through my stash of cables and found several that were either making intermittent contact, or were completely shot. The only critique I have is that the pictures show a USB-A port that has through-hole soldered supports, and the unit I received has surface mount soldered supports.

I'm concerned this might not be as sturdy as the through-hole model. Great product. Would buy again. I've used it several times to find a proper cable for various applications. Now need a similar one for USB-C. Lawrence July 25, I am so glad I bought this! Alan March 18, Great product Simple, easy to use, works as described.

A real pleasure to put aside cables that will not transfer data or fast charge. This little board does it really nicely. Would love to have usb c version. Would recommend. Works great. I would like to put it inside of some kind of shell or case while being used.

I'm afraid that I'm going to break it when plugging and unplugging cords. Much easier than tagging every usb cable. This device is a useful piece of kit. Bought one for me and one for my son. I have accumulated so many cables and run different hardware workshops where this is incredibly handy.

Works great and everybody that has seen it loves it. It's a perfect little gizmo for what it does. Gonna use it to cull some cables from the herd. OMG, it could be a necklace or hat brim thing too! Just gotta protect the battery side from human contact.

So much better than producing wear on an expensive phone port and waiting for it to say slowly, rapidly, and wondering what's going on. This product is one of those projects I wanted to build for the longest time. Maybe you are like me and have a box of USB micro cables that came with various gadgets. A few minutes with this tester will let you know which ones to keep and which to strip for their wires.

Any time I have issues with a USB device, I double-check the cable to make sure data and power are connected. Components Used This document is not restricted to specific software and hardware versions. Overview One of the critical parts of setting up any router is the selection of the serial cables to connect the router to the serial devices in your network.

The selection of the proper serial cable involves answering three questions: Is the router being connected to a data terminal equipment DTE or data communications equipment DCE device?

Is a male or female connector required on the cable? What signaling standard does the device require? Male or Female The gender of the connector is determined by examining the connector.
